Heidi 2.0
Heidi is a girl who has been raised by heraunt Detie in Maienfeld, Switzerland after the early deaths of herparents, Tobias and Adelheid (Detie's sister and brother-in-law).Detie brings 6-year-old Heidi to her paternal grandfather's house,up the mountain from Dörfli. He has been at odds with the villagersand embittered against God for years and lives in seclusion on thealm. This has earned him the nickname Alm-Uncle. He briefly resentsHeidi's arrival, but the girl's evident intelligence and cheerfulyet unaffected demeanor soon earn his genuine, if reserved, affection. Heidi enthusiastically befriends her new neighbors, young Peter the goatherd, his mother, Bridget, and his blindmaternal grandmother, who is "Grannie" to everyone. With eachseason that passes, the mountaintop inhabitants grow more attachedto Heidi.Three years later, Detie returns to take Heidi to Frankfurt tobe a hired lady's companion to a wealthy girl named Clara Sesemann, who is regarded as an invalid. The girl is charmed by Heidi'ssimple friendliness, and delights in all the funny mishaps broughtabout by Heidi's lack of experience with city life. However, theSesemanns' strict housekeeper, Fräulein Rottenmeier, views thehousehold disruptions as wanton misbehavior, and places Heidi undermore and more restraint. Soon, Heidi becomes terribly homesick, andgrows alarmingly pale and thin. Her one diversion is learning toread and write, motivated by her desire to go home and read toPeter's blind grandmother. Clara's paternal grandmother comes tovisit the children and becomes a friend to Heidi. She teaches Heidithat she can always seek relief from misery by praying to God.After months pass, the Frankfurt household is brought nearhysteria by nightly sightings of what appears to be a ghost. WhenClara's father and his friend the doctor keep awake one night tofind out what is causing the disturbances, they see that the"ghost" is actually just Heidi, who's sleepwalking in hernightgown. The doctor sees that Heidi's under a great deal ofstress. He warns Mr. Sesemann that if Heidi is not sent homepromptly, she may become very ill. Soon, a joyous Heidi returns tothe mountains, where she teaches her grandfather about the comfortof prayer. She reassures him that it's never too late to turn backto God. Her simple lesson prompts her grandfather to descend to thevillage and attend a church service for the first time in years, marking an end to his seclusion. He's heartily welcomed back by thechurch pastor and the villagers.Heidi and Clara continue to keep in touch and exchange letters.A visit by the doctor to Heidi leads him to eagerly recommend thatClara visit Heidi. He feels assured that the fresh mountain air andthe wholesome companionship will do her good. Clara makes thejourney again the next season and spends a wonderful summer withHeidi and becomes stronger on goat's milk and fresh mountain air.But Peter, who grows jealous of Heidi and Clara's friendship, pushes her empty wheelchair down the mountain to its destruction(although he later feels guilty about what he did and confesses toit). Without her wheelchair, she attempts to walk and is graduallysuccessful. Her grandmother and father are amazed and overcome withjoy to see Clara walking again. The Sesemann family promises toprovide permanent care for Heidi, if there ever comes a time whenher grandfather is no longer able to do so.

Fables for Children 2.0
There are plenty of Aesop's fables thatareoverlooked everyday. "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," "The TortoiseAndThe Hare," and "The Lion And The Mouse" are only a few of whichyouhave overlooked as being an Aesop fable. These fables, whichwereshort in structure, being one page at the very most, had onegoal. This goal was to deliver a moral. In "The Boy Who Cried Wolf,"alsoknown as "The Shepherd's Boy And The Wolf," delivers the moralthata liar cannot be believed even when telling the truth. In"TheTortoise And The Hare," the moral is that slow and steady winstherace. On that subject, plenty of expressions that we use everydaycomefrom Aesop's fables. "Don't count your chickens before theyhatch"comes from "The Milkmaid And Her Pail," which had to do withamilkmaid who was imagining everything she would do when shewouldturn the milk into butter and what would happen in her future.Shedropped the milk pail and watched her dreams shatter.Othersexpressions include "Honesty is the best policy" and "thinktwicebefore you act."Some of my personal favorites are those that aren't asfamiliarto most. These include "The Fox And The Crow," in which thecrowhas a piece of cheese in their beak that the fox wants. Hementionshow beautiful the crow is, but wants to hear her sing tomake sureshe's completely beautiful. When she opens her mouth to doso, shedrops the cheese to the fox for it to eat. "The Ass And TheLapdog"is another memorable fable. For the record, a donkey isreferred itas an "ass" throughout the fables. In this particularone, the assbecomes jealous of the dog's position and how he getsto be in thehouse and sit on his owner's lap. The ass then tries tobe like thedog and even sit on the owner's lap. The moral had to dowithsatisfaction, which became an interesting fiasco with the ass.Isaw an online slideshow that made this one look hilarious."TheWolf And The Crane" is another favorite of mine, in which awolfhad a bone stuck in his throat which the crane easily pulledout. The crane expected a material reward for this action, but thewolfreminded the crane that the reward was that he spared her bynoteating her. It goes to show you how we expect immediatematerialrewards for our actions, while we ignore the morepowerful,non-material rewards.Aesop's fables are highly clever pieces of literature thatofferbits of common sense. The Barnes & Noble collection doesanexcellent job putting together 284 fables and showing howbrilliantAesop or the group of storytellers known as Aesop were increatingthese pieces. The stories that are used are incrediblyfunny anduse everything from humans to gods to animals to plantsandanything and everything else in between. If you have yet to read a collection of Aesop's fables, there'smuch you have missed. Plenty collections exist, but the oneI readfrom is a part of the Barnes & Noble collection that canbefound at Barnes & Noble. I urge you to start reading themanddigest the powerful words of wisdom.

She and Gilbert make plans to attendRedmondCollege in the fall. This book sees Anne maturing slightly, even though shestillcannot avoid getting into a number of her familiar scrapes, asonlyAnne can—some of which include selling her neighbor's cow(havingmistaken it for her own), or getting stuck in a broken duckhouseroof while peeping into a pantry window.
